Two grenade explosions in Rwanda

(28.12.09)

Three people were left injured on christmas night in Huye district in Southern Rwanda following two seperate grenade explosions, new details suggest.

Police there is frantically searching for suspects behind two separate grenade blasts.

The first small blast happened at bar in Huye town around 20hours local time injuring three people including a mother and her son.

The second blast happened later at another guest house known as URWURI at another location out of town –when the grenade was hurled into a room through the window but nobody was hurt, according to Radio Rwanda.

The second blast did not seem to have hit the target because it fell about two meters from the house of URWURI Motel owner. She said the grenade exploded near the wall of the bedroom in which her children were sleeping.

In previous festive seasons, there have been similar cases. However, they are usually small blasts. Unusually, all have happened in Southern Rwanda.

Police was all evening calling on people not to be scared as there was no cause for alarm. The festive season will continue to be safe and people should go on with their festivities, a police spokesman said.
